The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York, on January 20, 1892. The sport quickly grew in popularity, establishing its first professional leagues in the 1920s and officially joining the Olympic program in 1936.
Legal & Sporting Rules Overview
The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.048 m) high. A field goal scores two points, unless made from behind the three-point line. The standard legal framework for international basketball is governed by FIBA, encompassing the Official Basketball Rules, Internal Regulations, and the disciplinary code managed by the BAT (Basketball Arbitral Tribunal).
